Bidding out YOur timber
BENEFITS OF BIDDING OUT TIMBER
There are many benefits of bidding out your timber through Upstate New York Forestry Services, but the most prevalent benefit is the fact you work with a forester. Woodlot owners who choose to not work with a forester, risk lower income on timber sales and reduced return from their future growing stock. Working with a consulting forester will avoid the potential of damaging the productivity of the forest as well as getting the most out of your timber sale
FREE TIMBER APPRAISAL
Upstate New York Forestry Services works for you. We ensure our clients needs are met and you get the most money for your timber. The first part of bidding your timber out, is to schedule a free timber appraisal. Please call Scottie at 607-426-3737 to schedule your free timber appraisal. During the appraisal I determine the maturity and health of your woodlot and develop management recommendations for your woodlot. Most woodlots are unique and have certain characteristics that need different styles of management. The appraisal allows me to give you the best recommendations.
LANDOWNER OBJECTIVES
Determining the landowner's objectives is a crucial step in developing a management plan for the timber harvest of your woodlot. Landowner's objectives must be clear in order for me to develop a sound management plan in order to meet all your needs and requests. Landowner objectives can range from using the timber to pay taxes or use a timber harvest to help increase wildlife habitat. Landowners should also consider if their primary objective is to maximize your immediate financial returns or if your more concerned with a long-term and consistent financial returns.
TIMBER INVENTORY AND EVALUATION
Once the landowner objectives are determined, then timber marking and inventory can begin. Before timber marking or evaluation can occur boundary lines are clearly marked around the relative timber harvest. Timber marking is done using silviculture, which is is the art and science of tending a forest. Once the trees are marked, they are measured to calculate the board foot of the tree. Once the board foot and quality of the mark trees are determined, then I can determine fair market value for your timber.
BID NOTICE
Once all the data is collected from your woodlot it is then compressed into a bid notice, which shows potential buyers the total board foot and the location of the sale. The bid notice is then sent to the potential log buyers in the area, including saw mills, loggers, and log brokerage companies. Potential timber purchasers will have 2 to 3 weeks to look over the job before placing a bid. Bids will be opened on a specific day determined by the landowner and myself. The landowner has the right to accept and reject any bidder.
TIMBER HARVEST
The purchaser of the timber will notify me when they are ready to begin harvesting the timber, and I will notify the landowner. Before the timber harvest begins I require that the performance bond be paid and that the purchaser shows proof of insurance. The performance bond is money that the purchaser puts down to guarantee that the all of the contract will be fulfilled. During the timber harvest I will conduct job inspections regularly to make sure there is compliance with the contract. Once the timber harvest is completed it is the purchaser's responsibility for the clean up of the woodlot. The skid trails and the landing will be leveled out, to the landowners expectation and mine. Once all terms of the contract are met, the performance bond will be returned to the purchaser of the timber.
